Two dozen of Grantham’s younger Freemasons are working together to support Lodge Almoners in caring for older and vulnerable members.
They’re all members of the Grantham Freemason Curry Club – an informal gathering of younger freemasons, who’ve been meeting in the town every eight weeks for the last two years for a few beers and curry.
Club member Chris Watkin says: “The promises we made at our initiation mean something, so we are offering our help to distressed older Brethren and widows of Freemasons in the Grantham area for shopping, collecting medicines or anything we can do to make their lives easier during the lockdown.”
Individual club members offer their help in a video Chris has put together, and you can view here. They say they understand that Lodge Almoners have their own networks, and have no desire to undermine those – instead, they see their efforts as complementary; a kind of backup for if or when demand becomes greater because of the situation in which we find ourselves.
Club members urge that anyone needing help – or anyone who knows of anyone needing help – should contact their Lodge Almoner in the normal way. If the Almoner thinks help from a Curry Club brother would be appropriate, he’s invited to contact Chris on 07950 147572, and he’ll liaise with the Curry Club to organise the help.
Added Chris: “We’ve sent news of our offer to all of Grantham’s Lodges via the hard-working secretaries, who will no doubt circulate it as appropriate.”
