On their mission to prove you’re #neverfarfromafreewheeler Freemasons of Lincolnshire’s Free Wheelers Motorcycle Lodge have travelled to the corners of England and seen national treasures – all on the same weekend.
IN THE NORTH they met national treasure and Hairy Biker Si King on Dave Day (above), supporting Brothers on Bikes, the Freemasons who’d sponsored the whole thing.
IN THE SOUTH a fleet of bikes belonging to Lodge members spent the night in the Tower of London with the real National Treasures the Crown Jewels. Lodge members were there at the invitation of the Yeoman Warders, who’d met Lodge member Chris Jones on his round Britain walk. Their visit involved watching the 700-year-old traditional of the Ceremony of the Keys performed by the Gurkhas, before enjoying a drink or two in the Yeoman Warders’ Bar.
AND IN BETWEEN, having forsaken two wheels in favour of four, a group went to Lincoln to support fellow Freemasons taking part in the Krazy Races soap box derby happening in the city for the second time.
Fellow Freemason Jim Brown, below, had taken the go-cart designed and built last year by the Free Wheelers Lodge Master Stewart Buckingham and, ahem, made it better for his Masons in Momentum team. Stewart offered technical comment, though Jim is a designer involved in world speed record attempts, so it’s not clear how much was incorporated into the new design. Some must have been, because Jim’s team steered the kart to fifth place, it having finished last but one last year. Lincolnshire’s Rough Ashlars came third with their kart, making a good showing for Lincolnshire Freemasonry.
AND WITHIN A WEEK a group was off again, this time heading west to ride the Tail of the Dragon from Cardiff to Llandudno via the Triumph factory at Hinckley near Leicester. They were spotted at Waitrose in Lincoln just ahead of departure.
