Lincolnshire Freemason Ollie Arnold scored a winning try to secure one of the world’s oldest rugby trophies for his Cardiff Met University side.
The 21-year-old hooker came on for the last 20 minutes of the Mallet Cup final at Cardiff Arms Park, and was able to turn the prospect of defeat into a three-point victory with his try, which was converted to deliver a 32-29 win. It was a narrower victory than it might have been; wayward kicking during the game had left seven points unclaimed with missed conversions and a failed penalty.
Ollie is a member of two Lodges, and is currently Junior Warden in both. He was initiated into Floreat Lodge in London, where his dad Richard is Secretary, in 2022, and joined Lumley Lodge in Skegness in January this year.
With the victory under his belt Ollie came back to Lincolnshire to consider which of several rugby-based options he will take for next season.
The Mallet Cup is a knockout tournament featuring various Cardiff and East District clubs, and dates from 1893. It is named after Thomas Henry Mallett, a carpenter who was a keen sportsman and supporter of Cardiff Rugby.
