A flight from Thailand and a five-hour drive from the south coast brought Peter Wiles, 91, back to St Peter Lodge in Cleethorpes to receive his 50-year certificate.
It was his son David who flew from Thailand and drove up the countryto get his Dad to Cleethorpes, where he was able to watch the presentation when the Lodge was called off. David Bird had taken the chair for the first part of the meeting including the presentation, which was delivered in two parts. The first, in the hands of Provincial Secretary Tony Miller, was a summary of Peter’s Lodge membership from initiation through to the Chair, and subsequent promotion to PPJGW. The second was done by David Bird, who invited Peter onto the floor to receive his certificate on behalf of the PGM.
After the presentation David Wiles was asked to retire from the Lodge whilst David Bird called the Lodge on again and formally handed it back to the Master.
Attending the ceremony was Zeb Zamo from Lincoln, who’d been invited to be there by Peter after the pair had exchanged emails about the relative merits of single and multiple ceremonies. Zeb said: “It was super evening. Peter and his wife left Cleethorpes a few years ago to be closer to his daughter at Storrington near Worthing. Travelling to Lodge became difficult, as he doesn’t drive any more. Sadly his wife passed away two years ago.
“And to top off the wonderful evening, after many visits to both Cleethorpes and Grimsby I had fish and chips at the festive board for the first time ever. They were delicious!”
