Paulinus Lodge at Lincoln celebrated a very special anniversary on Wednesday 1st March when Gordon Cooper received his 50-year certificate from the PGM Dave Wheeler.
Initiated on 7th February 1973, Gordon was the 296th member of Paulinus Lodge, and became the 65th W. Master in 1983. He was Lodge Secretary for a number of years and handed over this role to none other than one DM Wheeler in 1997.
Gordon, who is 92 years old is PPrJGW, and the evening was made even more special when he gave a faultless rendition of the Masonic Chain for the newly-initiated Brother Alan Parker at a very enjoyable festive board.
Illustrating that ‘nothing changes’, when Gordon was initiated rail workers and civil servants were on strike, but throughout the year there were developments still with us today, such as the introduction of VAT. It was also the year that, alongside the Republic of Ireland and Denmark, the UK joined the EEC.
In 1983, when Gordon went into the chair, the wearing of seatbelts became mandatory (but in cars; not in Masters’ chairs); Pat Jennings became the first player in English football to make 1,000 appearances in top flight fixtures, and the Metro was the country’s best-selling car.
