Freemasons from across our Province came together for our first conference about Building Together and its objective of bringing Craft and the Royal Arch closer together.
After an introduction by PGM Dave Wheeler, who called for us to be businesslike and professional, they learned that a two-year rollout is planned, with regional seminars in the first year, and others for individual Lodges, Chapters, and centres – or ‘units’ – as we’re calling them, in year two.
Provincial Membership Officer Mike Clay reminded brethren that the seven-year strategy developed by Pro Grand Master Jonathan Spence included the Royal Arch.
Supporting that will be the introduction of Chapter mentors next year, when Provincial Mentor Jason Fitzgerald’s role in the Craft will be expanded to include the Royal Arch.
Mike urged not only creating membership teams, but to make them effective by having the right people and the right goals.
He said: “Draft a membership policy and create a profile for web; understand where initiates and exaltees will come from, ad don’t lose sight of the fact that having a succession plan is vital.”
He added that it was equally important to identify potential leavers; do something to prevent them leaving.
“The bottom line is to involve people! If people who want to be involved aren’t, they’ll leave. Get newer people involved. The newest member is best-placed to know what attracted them to join.”
Robert Holland from Grantham offered sound advice. He said: “We should aim to be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm and apathy are equally infectious, and we mustn’t let apathy get the upper hand.”
