Installation anticipation turned to shock when Shaun Butler discovered he was to be installed into the Chair of Letchworth Lodge by the Pro Grand Master Jonathan Spence.
The decision for the Pro Grand Master to take the gavel for the ceremony had been a closely-guarded secret, of which Shaun, Membership and Communications Director at UGLE, didn’t become aware until it happened.
The Lodge meets in Freemasons Hall, and was created for employees working in the building and officers of UGLE. There to watch the ceremony amongst 120 very senior Freemasons Lincolnshire’s Past APGM Peter Brooks and Provincial Communications Officer Stuart Pearcey. Stuart said: “It was a ceremony with a difference. Although the features you’d expect of an installation ceremony – which was delivered to the high standard you’d expect – it took only 90 minutes. The regalia was different too, with a dress code calling for undress regalia, lounge suits, and no gloves.” Peter added: “It was an evening which will linger in the memory for a long time.”
A number of Provincial Grand Masters and senior UGLE officers were amongst those present, which prompted Shaun to say: “It meant a lot that you and Peter were there – some friendly faces in the scarier moments! It was a pleasure to welcome you and I am glad that you enjoyed the evening. ”
