Tens of thousands of travellers using London’s King’s Cross station see this advertising hoarding – but few understand that it has a special and unintended meaning for Freemasons.
It’s intended to promote the area in front of the station that’s being developed into King’s Cross Square’, a new public space planned as a ‘welcome mat’ for passengers arriving at the station.
But Freemasons whose membership means they are said to be ‘on the square’ know it’s hip to be part of the organisation, which has existed for more than 300 years.
The picture, taken by Lincolnshire Freemasons’ Membership Officer Mike Clay, shows Chris Foster with the hoarding. Mike said: “We spotted the sign on our way to a meeting at Freemasons’ Hall, our HQ in Covent Garden. It was never intended to promote Freemasonry, but does it perfectly.”
