A prizewinning lecture by Karl Lycett was the centrepiece of the December meeting of St Lawrence Lodge.
It was members’ first opportunity to hear in their own Lodge the lecture called Freemasonry in Marble which had won him the Thomas Ferens Lecture Competition for 2025.
The paper started life simply as something he wanted to write for himself, but went on to be considered by the editors of our Solomon resource, from where it was submitted as an entry for the lecture competition.
In it Karl explored the pursuit of perfection by drawing parallels with the creation of Michelangelo’s David, the 17-foot-tall marble statue in Florence, and what that could teach us about ourselves – finding the better person inside, just as the sculptor had released David from the marble.
Two other Lodge members were presented with their Grand Lodge certificates by Lodge Mentor Stuart Pearcey. In our picture are, from left, Certificate recipients Craig Rodley and Aubrey Hansard, Karl Lycett, all in their stewards’ collars, and Stuart Pearcey.
