Six Lincolnshire members went to Juno Lodge in Hull with Karl Lycett to hear him present the paper that won him the Thomas Ferens Prize.
He’s seen with the prize in the picture above, accompanied by, from left, Rob Lang, Nick Burton, Ian Needham, Karl, Mike Martin, Aubrey Hansard, James Steele, Jim Bole and John Cuthbert. They’re all members of St Lawrence in Scunthorpe with the exception of Mike from Ashlar in Lincoln and James, the Juno Lodge WM.
Ian said: “It was a good night and Karl did extremely well with his lecture.”
Karl said he thoroughly enjoyed the presenting his paper, even though the turnout had been smaller than expected. The shield he’s holding in the picture will be engraved with his name, after which it will be his to hold for a year.
The paper, called ‘Freemasonry in Marble’, used the process involved in Michelangelo’s creation of his statue David from a block of marble as a metaphor for the personal development a Freemason from the ‘ordinary man in the street’.
The paper started out simply as something he wanted to write for himself, but went on to be considered by the editors of our Solomon resource, from where it was submitted as an entry for the lecture competition.
Karl is now looking forward to sharing the paper with his own Lodge, which will happen on December 1st. To book a place to hear it first hand, email Lodge Secretary Richard Podmore: richard@firstcallhsq.co.uk
